The 5 Habits That Matter Most for Men’s Health

There is no single secret to staying healthy, but a handful of everyday habits do a lot of the heavy lifting. If you get these five right, most other goals become easier.

1. Prioritise sleep

Adults generally need at least seven hours of sleep a night. Good sleep supports energy, mood, weight management and hormone health. Keep a consistent schedule, limit screens and caffeine late in the day, and keep your bedroom cool and dark.

2. Lift something heavy, regularly

Public health guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activity at least two days a week, alongside about 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity. Strength training helps preserve muscle as you age, supports bone health and improves blood sugar control. Start with simple full-body sessions and progress gradually.

3. Eat enough protein

Protein helps you build and keep muscle and keeps you feeling full. The basic recommendation is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, and many active people do well with more. Spread it across your meals with foods like eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, beans and lentils.

4. Manage stress before it manages you

Long-term stress affects sleep, appetite, blood pressure and mood. You do not need hours of meditation: a daily walk, time outdoors, a few minutes of slow breathing, or simply protecting time with friends and family can make a real difference.

5. Keep up with check-ups

Regular visits with your doctor catch problems early, often before you notice symptoms. Ask which screenings make sense for your age and family history, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and certain cancer screenings.

Start small

Pick one habit, make it consistent for a few weeks, then add the next. Small, repeatable changes beat ambitious plans you cannot stick to.
